We (United for Peace With Justice, NYC) are writing to urge your support for one of the most important and effective groups in the antiwar movement, September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows. They are in a very serious financial crisis and need your support. September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows was founded by family members of those killed on September 11th who united to turn their grief into action for peace. Peaceful Tomorrows has been the conscience of the peace movement, consistently questioning the limitations and failures of our government's militaristic policies and urging that we pursue diplomatic and legal alternatives to war. They were one of the first groups to join United for Peace and Justice and have actively served on our National Steering Committee since its inception. Today they are in danger of running out of operating funds. A major funder withdrew promised support for an upcoming conference because of concerns that open, public question-and-answer sessions might contain criticism of the Bush administration or mention the war in Iraq. As we approach the fifth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, don't allow this crucial voice for peace to be silenced! Please make the most generous contribution you can to Peaceful Tomorrows. For more information call: 212-868-5545.
HAVING NO HEALTH INSURANCE IS THE THIRD-LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH FOR PEOPLE IN MASSACHUSETTS AGES 50-64.
Over 750,000 people in MA have no health insurance, a situation that causes early death and contributes to extraordinary levels of preventable illness and needless suffering.
Newton Dialogs is one of the organizations supporting the addition of a Health Care Amendment to our State Constitution to create a Commonwealth where every person has access to comprehensive, affordable and equitably financed coverage for medically necessary health care services including preventive care, mental health care and prescription drugs. See http://www.healthcareformass.org/ for details. Whatever health care reform bill our state legislature passes, there will be more work to guarantee everyone affordable comprehensive coverage. The Amendment will keep us on track until that works gets done.
Even though the Legislature ducked a yes or no vote on the Health Care Amendment at the July 12 ConCon, this Campaign is far from over. We need your help in getting a vote on the Amendment at the November 9th ConCon to qualify for the November 2008 ballot.
PLEASE CALL Senate President Robert Travaglini right now at 617.722.1500.
Ask him to promptly convene the special committee to study the Health Care Amendment so the committee can meet and report on the Amendment in time for a vote on November 9. This vote is a must to create a right to affordable, comprehensive, and fairly funded health and mental health care coverage for every Massachusetts resident.
Mass. Law Reform Institute's CORI Project will present a free CORI Training sponsored by & hosted at the Lucy Parsons Center.
CORI = "Criminal Offender Record Information"
* What is Criminal Offender Record Information & who gets access to it?
* What are the special rules for people seeking public & subsidized housing? What about human services jobs?
* How can people who "have CORI" get it sealed or otherwise help themselves?
* How do you read and understand a CORI report?
* How might we reform the CORI system?
This training is designed for people who have CORI, for people from the "support professions" who try to help people who have CORI, and for those who want to reform the CORI system. But everyone is welcome.
Register by August 22 by contacting Thomas Fiori at lucyparsons@tao.ca or calling 617-755-9964 and giving your name, organizational affiliation (if any), daytime address & phone number, and email address.

Despite its attempt to create a socially responsible image, Starbucks' failure to meaningfully embrace Fair Trade coffee has left coffee farmers and their children teetering on the brink of starvation in the Global South. A new documentary, Black Gold (blackgoldmovie.com), reveals in detail the pained existence of coffee farmers under the purchasing practices of Starbucks and other multinational corporations. In Starbucks cafes, baristas are paid a poverty wage and the company insures a lower percentage of employees than Wal-Mart. Starbucks baristas are organizing a union (starbucksunion.org) with the Industrial Workers of the World for a better life on and off the job. In response, the company has waged a fierce and relentless anti-union campaign that tramples on workers' rights. In this union-busting operation unburdened by the law, Starbucks routinely retaliates against baristas for supporting the union. In addition, Starbucks Chairman Howard Schultz recently broke the union of roasting plant employees. If you or your group is interested in getting involved with the campaign on the ground floor please contact IWW organizer and Starbucks barista Daniel Gross at dgross@iww.org or 917-577-1110.
“Olive Branch” Extra Virgin Olive Oil is raised without pesticides or sprays and First-Cold-Pressed. This year we are importing the oil directly from the Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committee (PARC), a non-governmental, non-profit organization in Ramallah which has been on the forefront of supporting Palestinian agriculture since the 1980’s. PARC buys its olive oil from 85 different small farmer cooperatives in the West Bank. It takes care of testing, quality control, bottling, labeling and marketing. Available in 750ml bottles, by the case (12 bottles), or more. Now more than ever, important to Palestinian farmers. For ordering and other info, please email us at palestinebostonoliveoil@yahoo.com or call Susie at 781-648-6307.

This dispassionate, useful documentary contemplates the changing political climate over the last 45 years during which evangelical Christianity has moved steadily from the margins of politics into Congress and the White House. An updated, narration-free distillation of a 1996 PBS series, it lets leading voices of the religious right like Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, and Ralph Reed describe their progress (and setbacks) in helping land George W. Bush in the White House. Aggressive grass-roots organizing, it concludes, has been the crucial factor.

79 Years Ago, Sacco and Vanzetti were executed by the U.S. Government because they were immigrants and they were anarchists. This year the government continues to oppress immigrants and anarchists with arrests, domestic spying, grand juries, prison, deportation, and slander. Our demands: Amnesty to All Immigrants, Freedom For the Prisoners of the Green Scare and the End of Political Repression.
