____________

Support for Palestinian Refugee Camps in Lebanon

We are all receiving requests for donations to help Lebanon. Our listener Amy Hendrickson of Brookline Peaceworks urges you to contribute as described here.

Those who will not be receiving help are the Palestinian Refugee camps in Lebanon. They were "degraded" long before the present crisis, and their situation is now worse. NONETHELESS, THEY ARE TAKING IN LEBANESE REFUGEES FROM THE SOUTH AND OTHER HEAVILY BOMBED AREAS.

Naseer Aruri and Elaine Hagopian are trying to get some funds to them immediately. We have no tax exempt organization that can receive these funds. Your contribution will not be tax deductible. However, we are assuming that this will not be a factor in this emergency situation. We are asking you all to send Elaine your checks in whatever amount - every dollar helps - payable to Elaine Hagopian who will coordinate the effort. She will cash the checks immediately, add them together, and try to do a bank transfer. Her bank - Cambridge Savings Bank - has informed her that they can try to do a bank transfer. If it doesn't work, the bank will return the funds. They would then be delivered by a wife/husband couple (Lebanese and Palestinian) who teach at AUB and who are waiting to get word as to when they can return. They are presently waiting it out in Boston area. They are a couple who have worked in the camps and know the heads of the programs in there. Elaine's address is: Elaine Hagopian, 385 Mass. Ave. #33, Arlington, MA 02474-6727. If you want to reach her by phone for any reason, call 781 648 1245. Please act now. Also send your email address with your check so Elaine can acknowledge your donation upon receipt. A final accounting will be sent to all donors.

Thank you in advance for responding to this urgent request.

Naseer Aruri     and     Elaine Hagopian

____________

Sign Lebanon Cease Fire Petition!

Our colleague John Grebe (host of "Sounds of Dissent" on this station Saturdays 11am-1pm) has just signed a petition urging regional and global leaders to speak out and support Kofi Annan's proposal. If people around the world can persuade their governments to unite in demanding a ceasefire, all sides in this conflict will be pressured to stand down. Can you sign the petition too?

The petition will be sent to key regional and global leaders and publicized in major newspapers in the Middle East, US and Europe. With enough signatures we can help pressure our so-called leaders to stop the violence.

____________

Jul 15 - Sep 21: Join with People All Around the World
for the "Bring the Troops Home FAST!"

As of July 9, 2006, 3547 people were engaging in solidarity fasts around the nation and in 22 other countries. If you are interested in joining, you can sign up on Code Pink Boston's website calendar for times you pledge to fast. Please sign up for a time that makes sense in your life. 24 hours is the suggested time, but do as little or as much as works for you. Some people do juice fasts, others drink only water. The important thing is to let people know what you are doing and why. Attending vigils and/or demonstrations with appropriate signs is a good way to spread the work and prepares people for the Declaration of Peace Campaign on 9/21/2006. Send email to encubed1@yahoo.com for additional information.

____________

CALL, CALL AGAIN, CALL SOME MORE, AND KEEP CALLING.
CALL YOUR MEMBERS OF CONGRESS NOW AND
DEMAND THEY STOP SUPPORTING WAR AGAINST LEBANON

TOLL-FREE NUMBERS: 888-355-3588 and 800-828-0498
ACTION PAGE: Cease-Fire at PeaceTeam.net

No student of history can escape the parallels between what is going on in Lebanon now and the start of World War I. The question is, do we have political will, and the sanity, to stop it. Those who are not interested in history are at the mercy of the present, so we might as well review. Please go to: A Tale of Two Resolutions.

____________

Message from Jill Stein, MD
Candidate for Secretary of State, MA
[also applies to Grace Ross, candidate for Governor]

I believe the Secretary of State should not be an insider bureaucrat, but an independent watchdog - and advocate - for our democracy. Please join me in starting to make this a reality by lending a hand in our petition campaign now. It's fun and a great way to get the word out about our campaign - and lay the groundwork for an upsurge of democracy in November! THE PETITION CAMPAIGN NEEDS YOU NOW!

Call Pat Keaney, petition coordinator, at 857-829-1882, or email her.
Jill' email.

We are just a few days away from the deadline for signature collection to get on the ballot. To be on the ballot in November, we need 5,000 certified signatures. We currently have about 2,000, with several thousand more in the process of being certified.

IF YOU WANT AFFORDABLE, UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE, YOU NEED DEMOCRACY TO GET THERE! The legislature's recent shameful action - killing the proposed referendum for a constitutional right to health care by sending it to a "study" committee to die - is a bitter illustration that democratic reform is needed to enable the solutions for which there is enormous public support and critical need. This initiative was supported by a 2:1 margin by the people of Massachusetts. Yet the insurance industry again won out over the will of the people. We urge disappointed health care advocates to join us in this campaign for democratic reform.

SEIZE THE MOMENT! HELP GATHER SIGNATURES.

[NOTE: Our special friend John Bonifaz is also running for Secretary of the Commonwealth on the Democratic ticket (has sufficient signatures). Jill Stein would not try to beat Bonifaz if he wins the Democratic nomination.]

Justice at Starbucks

Despite its attempt to create a socially responsible image, Starbucks' failure to meaningfully embrace Fair Trade coffee has left coffee farmers and their children teetering on the brink of starvation in the Global South. A new documentary, Black Gold (blackgoldmovie.com), reveals in detail the pained existence of coffee farmers under the purchasing practices of Starbucks and other multinational corporations. In Starbucks cafes, baristas are paid a poverty wage and the company insures a lower percentage of employees than Wal-Mart. Starbucks baristas are organizing a union (starbucksunion.org) with the Industrial Workers of the World for a better life on and off the job. In response, the company has waged a fierce and relentless anti-union campaign that tramples on workers' rights. In this union-busting operation unburdened by the law, Starbucks routinely retaliates against baristas for supporting the union. In addition, Starbucks Chairman Howard Schultz recently broke the union of roasting plant employees. If you or your group is interested in getting involved with the campaign on the ground floor please contact IWW organizer and Starbucks barista Daniel Gross at dgross@iww.org or 917-577-1110.

PURCHASE OLIVE OIL PRODUCED IN PALESTINE

“Olive Branch” Extra Virgin Olive Oil is raised without pesticides or sprays and First-Cold-Pressed. This year we are importing the oil directly from the Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committee (PARC), a non-governmental, non-profit organization in Ramallah which has been on the forefront of supporting Palestinian agriculture since the 1980’s. PARC buys its olive oil from 85 different small farmer cooperatives in the West Bank. It takes care of testing, quality control, bottling, labeling and marketing. Available in 750ml bottles, by the case (12 bottles), or more. Now more than ever, important to Palestinian farmers. Amnesty International USA vigils

AIUSA has created a special web page to help local groups and activists organize their own vigils. On this page, you can find suggestions for where to hold your vigil, recommendations for visuals, and a suggested passage that will be read at other Amnesty vigils worldwide. You can also find and sign a petition, which will be passed out at the vigils and then sent to Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice calling for a ceasefire.

This is an important opportunity for AIUSA members to join the global effort to prevent further civilian casualties in this conflict.
