Continuing Solidarity Alert!

Justice at Starbucks

Despite its attempt to create a socially responsible image, Starbucks' failure to meaningfully embrace Fair Trade coffee has left coffee farmers and their children teetering on the brink of starvation in the Global South. A new documentary, Black Gold (blackgoldmovie.com), reveals in detail the pained existence of coffee farmers under the purchasing practices of Starbucks and other multinational corporations. In Starbucks cafes, baristas are paid a poverty wage and the company insures a lower percentage of employees than Wal-Mart. Starbucks baristas are organizing a union (starbucksunion.org) with the Industrial Workers of the World for a better life on and off the job. In response, the company has waged a fierce and relentless anti-union campaign that tramples on workers' rights. In this union-busting operation unburdened by the law, Starbucks routinely retaliates against baristas for supporting the union. In addition, Starbucks Chairman Howard Schultz recently broke the union of roasting plant employees. If you or your group is interested in getting involved with the campaign on the ground floor please contact IWW organizer and Starbucks barista Daniel Gross at dgross@iww.org or 917-577-1110.

9/11 Truth Leaflet Distribution

Hello! My name if Jeff Tanzer. I have been distributing 911 Truth material at Harvard Square in Cambridge and other areas on a weekly basis, and I am writing you to invite you to join me. I've been handing out handbills and deception dollars and engaging in spirited conversation with people as they walk by. I would appreciate anyone joining in on this project with me who shares my desire to spread 911 Truth. You would be welcome to join me for a morning's leafleting or to help me plan and carry out other actions to communicate the truth to people about the events of 9/11/01. I have a supply of materials and do not ask for donations. However, If anyone is serious about involvement then I will certainly appreciate you contributing to the materials costs of this project.

I can be emailed at dexterousdigits@yahoo.com , also my phone contact is 978-741-4921. Please call ONLY between 5:30 & 6pm. I recommend bringing signs for when we hand out literature, and I am always open to additional ideas for how to make 911 Truth more visible. Blogs, computer stuff, etc is nice too, but a face and our message needs to be presented to the public. As things get more dangerous in this country we all need to take a little time and have the courage to put this out for all to see. I hope you will consider joining me.

Lawmaker Wants UW Lecturer Fired Over 9/11 Views

Barrett Expressed Views On Milwaukee Radio Show
POSTED: 7:04 pm CDT June 30, 2006
UPDATED: 10:01 pm CDT June 30, 2006

MADISON, Wis. -- University of Wisconsin-Madison officials are reviewing the background of a UW-Madison lecturer after a state lawmaker demanded he be fired for his beliefs about Sept. 11, 2001.

Kevin Barrett has a doctorate and lectures on Islamic culture and religion. He is also co-founder of a group that believes some in our government arranged the Sept. 11 attacks.

In some circles, especially academic ones, the debate over what really happened on Sept. 11 continues. The issue now is whether such radical beliefs belong in the college classroom...

[TJR hosts note with frustration that the poll offers no option for those of us who AGREE with Barrett's "radical" belief: "The alternative theory is that they must have at least had some inside help, and more likely that the whole thing was an inside job from start to finish," Barrett said. "By far the strongest hypothesis at this point is that 9/11 was an inside job designed as a war-trigger cover operation … designed to launch a series of wars -- not just one war but a long series of wars."]

Verizon Workers' Rights

Workers at Verizon Wireless (VZW) lack basic workplace rights and receive inadequate health and retirement benefits. When they have tried to organize to fix these problems, VZW has conducted a campaign of illegal firings, threats, intimidation, and worker surveillance and has even shut down Northeast call centers and moved them to "right to work" states.

Pledge not to buy Verizon Wireless, or pledge to switch your cell phone carrier.

For more than a decade, Verizon Wireless has shown total disregard for labor law and the rights of workers to a voice in the workplace and to a fair contract. Workers at VZW who want a union voice have been fired and laid off, harassed and intimidated by supervisors, required to attend "captive audience" meetings and mandatory anti-union training. Call centers that had a growing number of union supporters were shut down between 2000 and 2004, putting 2,000 people out of work in MA, NY, and NJ. Verizon Wireless has refused to abide by the agreement it made with CWA to remain neutral in union organizing efforts in the Northeast and is instead using endless litigation to prevent employees from making use of the agreement. There are numerous complaints of labor law violations pending against Verizon Wireless.

The contrast between Verizon Wireless and Cingular Wireless, which supports full employer neutrality and card check, couldn't be clearer. At Cingular, where there is true neutrality, more than 17,000 workers have joined CWA just since July 2005, when those agreements went into effect at what was AT&T Wireless. It's clear that when fear and intimidation are removed from the workplace, workers choose a union voice. That's what is happening at Cingular and that's exactly what would happen at Verizon Wireless.

Take the Pledge Now!

FILMS

The War Tapes

Kendall Square Cinema
Movie's Official Web Site

Winner of the Best International Documentary 2006 at Tribeca Film Festival In March of 2004, just as the insurgent movement strengthened, several members of one National Guard unit arrived in Iraq carrying digital video cameras. This is the movie they made with director Deborah Scranton and a team of award-winning filmmakers. It's the first war movie filmed by soldiers themselves on the front lines in Iraq. It is edited down from 1000 hours of tape filmed over one year. Funnier, spicier and more wrenching than stories other people might tell about them, like any true story about war, The War Tapes engages the hard, tense, passionate, always difficult and sometimes beautiful way relationships develop and change.

12:30 - 1:30 PM: WE SAY NO TO ISRAEL'S WAR CRIMES!

Where: outside the Israeli Consulate
20 Park Plaza (near Arlington Street Station)

Demonstration to denounce Israel's war crimes in the Gaza Strip and the collective punishment of the Palestinian People.

On June 30, Amnesty International declared that "deliberate attacks by Israeli forces against civilian property and infrastructure violate international humanitarian law and constitute war crimes."

With the destruction of electricity and water supplies, a humanitarian crisis of huge proportions is impending. We must break the silence that is allowing Israel to operate with total impunity against the 1.4 million people who live in the Gaza Strip, half of whomare under the age of 14 years old.

We are drafting an open letter to be sent to the press and delivered to Israel Consul General Meir Shlomo on July 12.

Please plan to attend - and bring signs calling for an End to Israel's War Crimes, and saying "NO to Collective Punishment".

Community Change Brown Bag Anti-Racism Discussion Series

THE WEALTH GAP
What Does It Have To Do With 'RACISM'?

Does lifting up the 'racial' aspect of wealth inequality undermine efforts to build movements for economic justice?

Is the term 'racism' an adequate analytical tool?

Do the words 'white supremacy' close the space for dialogue and limit cross racial movement building?

The ways we talk about race are critical to our analysis of the problems we face and the solutions we propose. Come discuss these crucial issues with CHAKA A. K. UZONDU of United for a Fair Economy.

Please bring your lunch. Beverages will be provided. $5 contribution requested. RSVP (617) 523-0555 or ernes-@communitychangeinc.org
