Join a Friday fast and/or protest in solidarity with illegal detentions. The fast began in 2005 when Nobel Peace Laureates Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Adolpho Esquivel, (Argentina), along with others around the world, chose this method to seek the release of our unjustly detained and tortured brothers and sisters.
In Boston, local activists Susan McLucas and Phoebe Knopf have joined the Friday fast and will protest every Friday in front of the JFK Building from noon to one. The action, which is rooted in nonviolence, includes speakers, music, hand-outs and petitions to create public pressure to stop all illegal detentions and to try those responsible for the illegal treatment of thousands of detainees, most of whom are Arab and Muslim men. Susan and Phoebe will be wearing orange jumpsuits.
Representative Dennis Kucinich (Democrat - Ohio, and a 2008 Presidential Candidate) filed three articles of impeachment of VP Dick Cheney on Tuesday, 4/24/07. (see these articles below)
House Resolution (HR) 333 first goes to the House Judiciary Committee headed by John Conyers. The committee will then forward it to the main body. NOW is the time to contact your Representative and Senators to let them know that is essential for the future of our fragile democracy that House members give careful consideration to the Articles and vote to impeach Dick Cheney.

Doris Tennant and Ellen Lubell (of Newton) are representing a Guantanamo prisoner pro bono, so they are providing their time at no charge. However, their costs, including their own travel and that of a translator, translator fees, and Freedom of Information Act requests, are running at least $20,000 for this year, and will likely continue at that same pace or more. Most of the other attorneys who are representing Guantanamo detainees are members of large law firms that can cover these types of expenses, but in their case the two of them are the firm.
If you would like to make a contribution to help them defray costs, it would be much appreciated. Please make your check payable to "Tennant Lubell Detainee Fund." Your contribution will NOT be tax-deductible, but they promise to put it to good use to help provide fundamental legal rights to a man who remains in indefinite detention.

“Olive Branch” Extra Virgin Olive Oil is raised without pesticides or sprays and First-Cold-Pressed. This year we are importing the oil directly from the Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committee (PARC), a non-governmental, non-profit organization in Ramallah which has been on the forefront of supporting Palestinian agriculture since the 1980’s. PARC buys its olive oil from 85 different small farmer cooperatives in the West Bank. It takes care of testing, quality control, bottling, labeling and marketing. Available in 750ml bottles, by the case (12 bottles), or more. Now more than ever, important to Palestinian farmers.

A PEACE AND JUSTICE CONGREGATION SINCE 1920
Wellesley's annual Parade is Sunday, May 20th, beginning at 1 PM from Wellesley Hills. The Wellesley Peace Group, which these days basically comes into existence only in order to march in this parade, is again scheduled to march (we're right behind the Wellesley Democrats). I'm the coordinator and contact person for the group, which means that every year I try to get people to join us - as I'm doing here.
I do think it matters that we march in the parade; it has a very military feel to it, the parade, and its military feel is to some extent challenged by our presence there (which is why we sometimes get cheered and - considerably less frequently - heckled).
Classes are FREE, with tasting of dishes demonstrated.

Professor Moomaw is a lead author on many of the science and policy reports issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
Prof. Moomaw's talk, will highlight local initiatives such as EarthWorks that are doing the ground-level work necessary to make urban settlements sustainable into the future, a future made even more uncertain by the impacts of unprecedented climate change.
Everyone is invited to this talk--
I hope everyone will be able to attend to learn more about EarthWorks, enjoy delicious food from Haley House, and bid on terrific items in the silent auction ranging from an overnight stay, private tour and tasting at Truro Vineyards, to a pair of pear trees, to a baseball signed by future Hall of Famer Alex Cora (what a season he's having!!), to Boston-area museum passes, whale watching tix, gift certificates to local restaurants, and much, much more.
Most of all, I hope you will come for the opportunity to strengthen your connections with neighbors, colleagues and friends who, like you, are working to make Boston a healthy, just, beautiful, and sustainable place to live, work, and play.
We will gather on Boston Common in front of the state house and walk through the common crossing Tremont Street, and down Washington Street.
We will participate in a silent walk through Boston to remember the suffering and loss of lives in this war.
Remembering husbands, sons, daughters, brothers and sisters who served in the military, and since soldiers and civilians die together, we remember the ordinary Iraqi people who are killed in their homes and on the streets just because they live in the midst of a war torn country.
We live in a culture of violence both in our local communities and in the wider world. It is the responsibility of every person to use their personal power to say no more war, no more killing, and no more death and suffering. It is especially important for women to speak and walk for peace as it is we who give birth to boys and raise them to be men.
Cost of the war as of May 1st: $421,598,578,837
Number of American soldiers killed: 3350
Estimated number of Iraqi civilians deaths caused:
minimum: 62570;
maximum: over one million.
Youth killed by guns in Boston: 51 (in 2005) Non-fatal gunshot wounds: 287

This forum features Paul Hawken (environmentalist, author, founder of Erewhon Trading Company, Smith & Hawken, and the Pax Group, and executive director of the Natural Capital Institute) moderated by Steve Curwood (host of Living on Earth).
From billion-dollar nonprofits to single person causes, there is a growing worldwide movement of organizations dedicated to restoring the environment and fostering social justice. This is a movement with no name, leader, or headquarters, but it can be seen in every city, town, and culture. It is organizing from the bottom up and is emerging as an extraordinary and creative expression of shared values worldwide. What are the driving forces behind these developments? Can the interests of these organizations translate into effective government policies and profitable businesses? The evening¹s program will feature Paul Hawken environmentalist, businessman, and founder of the first natural foods company who will address the creation of a worldwide grassroots movement based on hope and humanity. The discussion will be moderated by Steve Curwood, host of Living on Earth.
Equal time will be provided for prepared remarks and questions from the audience. Come join the conversation.

This 50 minute interview with retired Pentagon analyst Chuck Spinney will inform a discussion relating military spending to local community need for teachers, police, fire, library and other services. As a career insider, Spinney’s contribution is using the Pentagon’s data to demonstrate that the strategy is “to turn on the money spigot and lock it open.” He reminds us that Pentagon spending is so out of control that auditors are unable to account for a trillion dollars. Congress subsequently exempted the Pentagon from federal audit requirements.
Chuck Spinney serves on the Military Advisors Committee of Business Leaders for Sensible Priorities. That group endorses the Common Sense Budget Act recently introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Congresswomen Barbara Lee and Lynn Woolsey and 22 co-sponsors including 3rd Congressional District Representative Jim McGovern. It would redirect military spending to local community needs. Data from National Priorities Project, copies of the Common Sense Budget Act, and other materials will be provided. All are welcome to join us for this discussion.
One country has already experienced "peak oil." When the USSR collapsed, Cuba's access to cheap energy disappeared almost overnight. How they managed through conservation and cooperation to work past hunger and paralyzed transportation systems is detailed in this inspiring and hopeful film.

Sponsors:To help prepare for a Massachusetts companion action to the June 26 Day of Action to Restore the Constitution in Washington D.C., we will be showing "Security vs. Liberty: The Other War" at the ACLU of Mass. office on Wednesday, May 23 at 6:30 p.m., and will follow it with a discussion of the Military Commissions Act and the brainstorming for the local Day of Action in Boston.
The 50-minute film is part of the PBS "America at the Crossroads" series. Even if you can't attend the Day of Action, please sign up below and join us for this video and the discussion.
This event in free and open to the public and will include ample time for discussion.
About the film:
Following 9/11, the U.S. government adopted some controversial new tactics intended to prevent future terrorist attacks, including warrantless eavesdropping on Americans' phone calls, secret demands for records under the Patriot Act, and FBI sting operations against people thought to be potential terrorists.
The Bush Administration contends these tactics have helped to save American lives, but critics say they have severely damaged our individual liberties.
Three stories in the film illustrate the issues of
security and liberty:
* In a public library
* At the National Security Agency
* An FBI sting operation
Security vs. Liberty explores this urgent national debate by talking with leading critics and advocates of the new policies, and telling the stories of people whose lives have been directly affected.
If the war against terror is truly the long struggle our leaders say it will be, then so too will be the struggle to set the right balance between security and liberty. This program provides valuable information that will help Americans come to grips with the difficult choices we face.
We request RSVP ( online or by phone, 617-482-3170).
Please RSVP by calling (or clicking the "Sign Me Up" button online), so that we will know how many people will be attending.The Women's Fightback Network/Red de Mujeres en Lucha and the International Action Center invites you to attend an eyewitness report back from the WIDF along with video highlights.
